DP: Ode To A Playground

Today’s Daily Prompt asks us to ‘A place from your past or childhood, one that you’re fond of, is destroyed. Write it a memorial.’

Well, I can think of a childhood place of mine which has actually been destroyed, so I should be able to do this.

‘We are gathered here today to mark the loss of the esteemed Splash Swimming Pool. A much loved part of our community which has stood here for many years, servicing the needs of the public and hosting the swimming club. The reason for its destruction seems fairly unjust to many. A supermarket shall occupy the place it stood upon; yet we already have two superstores in the town. Let us not lose the memories we each have for this place. Forever shall we cherish them. ”

It’s been three years – there is no supermarket there, just free parking. Not even making money for the town.

  1. Hooray for urban “planning.” There are so many example of this where I live now – they push out existing instutions to bring in these big projects that are supposed to be revenue earners for the city – only for the projects to stall and fail – the people are out their pool or their park and out the tax dollars that went towards bringing in the project in the first place – lose, lose.
