“When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton.”
Of course, it’s the beginning of The Lord of the Rings series. Today’s Daily Prompt says: “Take the first sentence from your favorite book and make it the first sentence of your post.” So, on with a post?
I’d just like to point out a cute little link between the two books, LOTR and the Hobbit that most people overlook. Both books start with a party, of sorts. The first chapter of The Hobbit is ‘The Unexpected Party’, and the first in LOTR is ‘The Long Awaited Party’. Both parties are merry gatherings and the drinking of ales, the eating of pastries. Both parties are indeed hosted by Mr. Bilbo Baggins. The difference being that he is only the willing host of one of them! He’s far happier at the Hobbit gathering of his eleventy-first birthday than the Dwarves invading his house at Gandalf’s bequest!
